Third in a row?

The government
Just a bit more than one year before the 2018 elections in Hungary it seems like Viktor Orban will be the prime minister for 4 more years after 2018 spring. According to the latest polls Fidesz-KDNP will win again and no one will really get close to them. Orban became a widely known European politician and this makes him look like more suitable for the job than any other candidate. The left side is deeply divided and the far-right Jobbik is not able to become more popular. The Fidesz slogan more likely is that „we will continue” and that will be enough for the win. Probably in the next one year the government won’t come up with any risky idea that can make them lose their popularity.

 Jobbik
The far-right Jobbik has really changed its face in the recent months. Gábor Vona declared that he wants a widely accepted party. He removed everyone who was reminder for the far-right past. He really wanted to get ride of the racist and anti-Semitic scandals. Actually it succeeded the party is less radical than it was before but despite that the party couldn’t really become more popular. Vona also declared that he wants to be prime minister and want to replace the current government. If he not succeeds in 2018 he stated that he will resign from his positons in the party.

MSZP
The former socialist party found its prime minister candidate. Also they found themselves a new way.  Under the prime ministry of Ferenc Gyurcsány the party became more liberal and less social-democrat as it was before. At MSZP the new way is the old way. Now the prime minister candidate László Botka revealed the new way that they don’t want to be liberal anymore but more social. In their campaign they declared that their main goal is to stop poverty. Botka’s goal is to win the elections but it's very unlikely to happen.

DK
Demokratikus Koalíció is the name of the party of the former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. As his old party the MSZP became more social-democrat he has to become more liberal. He is against euro-skepticism. He rather agrees with the current way of the EU as the opposite of Orban.

Other parties
There are several small parties in the left. Actually it’s very harmful for the left side. The current election system is rather better for the more popular parties. The small left side parties are usually just a small group around 1 or 2 famous political figures. MOMA is the party of former Minister of Finance, Lajos Bokros. Liberálisok is the party of former SZDSZ member Gábor Fodor. There are also parties called PM and Együtt they both around 1% in the latest polls. LMP is a small green party that will very likely to get into the parliament after the elections. They condemn the Fidesz government but also the left-side and the former elite. A new party Momentum is about 1%. They get enough signatures to force the government to call for a referendum about the 2024 Budapest Olympics. To avoid a referendum that can weaken the position of the government just one year before the elections, they rather resigned from the Olympic candidature process.
